What we know about the songs on 1989 - so far
The first song on 1989 is cowritten by Ryan Tedder and is called I Know Places. It’s about her moving to New York City and has very predominate drums - somehow similar to State Of Grace and possibly a tour opener. During the beat Taylor says “confetti”.
The second song on the album is a sassy one. Taylor paints a picture of the girl media have been given her - “The media basically views her as this maneating serial dater that one minute pushes away a guy but the next is clingy and wants them back. ” According to Swingofyourstep this song has some great lines that are so great he wants to get them tattooed.
Another song cowritten with Ryan Tedder is a song were she shows off her vocal skills. It has a “really interesting metaphor” in it. (twirlersleft)
As mentioned in Rolling Stone, “Wildest Dreams” is Taylor’s take on love. Taylor told Rolling Stone “I think the way I used to approach relationships was very idealistic. I used to go into them thinking, ‘Maybe this is the one — we’ll get married and have a family, this could be forever.’ Whereas now I go in thinking, ‘How long do we have on the clock — before something comes along and puts a wrench in it, or your publicist calls and says this isn’t a good idea?’” It’s not a happy song but it’s kinda sad.
A song about how a guy who broke up with his girlfriend because he is afraid of how in love he is and he wants to experience the world and date around. Then he realizes what he lost and came back for it six months too late. Apparently describes a process for not making it happen again.
The first song written for 1989 is cowritten (or coproduced) by Nathan Chapman (!) and is about how she were together with someone who wasn’t ready so they split up. Eventually they came back together. taylor has realized the song has a greater message and played it with footage with soldiers returning to their families.
Bad Blood is about Katy Perry and not just about she hiring dancers of the Red tour, but her being mean to Taylor all the time without being open about not liking her. Musically it sounds a little bit of one of Katy’s songs (I wonder which one?).
All You Had To Do Was Stay is about a relationship that ended but then Taylor had a dream in which he came to her door and every time she opened her mouth to yell at him all that came out was “STAY” (sung in a high pitched voice).
One of the songs she wrote with Jack Antonoff is kind of repeaty.
Out Of The Woods is cowritten by Jack Antonoff and is about a skiing accident with Harry Styles. "It’s a frantic tale of a relationship where, Swift says, ‘every day was a struggle. Forget making plans for life – we were just trying to make it to next week’." Remember when you hit the brakes too soon/Twenty stitches in a hospital room
I Wish You Would is about a relationship that ended and the guy bought a house on the same street as Taylor. When they were on more friendly terms he told her that it was strange for him to drive to his house because he used to turn up her driveway. Taylor wrote this as a song when two people are thinking about each other and aren’t speaking. (Perhaps about Conor?)
Style is not a diss song at all, it’s very catchy.
One song has a melody that reminds the listener to Lana Del Rey.
The last song on 1989 is cowritten by Imogen Heap and it seems to move everyone who hears it. She wrote it in February 2014 when the Red tour was in London. Taylor ”went to her house which is two hours outside of London and is a single castle turret in the middle of this town with lots of horses and small town.” The songs about when Taylor was in London and realized her exboyfriend was also there but she didn’t feel the usual sense of uneasiness and instead she felt fine, and this is what this song is about.
This is Taylor’s saxo player, his name is Chad and yeah he’s hot *heart eyes*

I was lucky enough to spend the most amazing and magical afternoon with the one and only @taylorswift today! Thanks to her, I hung out with her at her house, listened to the entire new album, ate her delicious home-made cookies, touched her cats, sat in her living room, hugged and talked to her mom + dad, and met the most incredible people. After spending hours making memories that’ll last a lifetime, I took pictures with her and hugged her. Taylor: “ok how about I read the book & you hold my Grammy” ❤️ I will never forget tonight, and all the memories we made. Thank you Taylor for doing this for us. I’ll love you forever and always. #1989secretsessions #asw1989 #taylorswift #1989 #IDIED #SHETOLDMESHELOVEDME #shegavemeaHighfive #SheHuggedMeThreeTimes #ILoveHer
